Turf vs Grass: differences, pros and cons

thegardenscapesguy

Thanks to technological advancements, we now have a choice of owning a real grass lawn or artificial grass lawn. And the main question is: which one is better? To answer this question and help you decide which is best for you, we have compared some pros and cons of each.

ARTIFICIAL GRASS:

Pros

  • First of all: Lower maintenance costs. Since there’s no need to water, cut or fertilize the turf, this will help you save lots of money.

  • Much more durable than natural grass.

  • Easy to clean

  • Although the lawn is artificial, it’s a very eco-friendly option, since it requires zero pesticides and other chemicals

Cons:

  • The initial costs to install artificial grass can be high

  • Artificial turf can absorb heat and can get a bit hot on extremely warm days – the opposite of real grass

REAL GRASS

Pros

  • It’s real: the smell, the touch and the freshness of the good looking green “carpet” are hard to ignore!

  • Growing real grass is usually a low cost installation.

Cons

  • It can be low cost in general, but definitely not low maintenance. You’ll need some decent soil, the right grass seed and some water and you’re ready to go. There’s also mowing, watering, fertilizing, which requires money and time

  • Natural grass is not an eco-friendly lawn. To keep it healthy, you’ll use water, pesticides, gas and electricity, which is not good for the environment at all.

  • From overuse, it can create bare or discolored areas or muddy zones
