Tips and Tricks to Enhance Your Home with Foundation Plantings

"Foundation plants" (also known as shrubs) are types of plant that can grow to a height of three to six feet and are suitable for being planted close to our homes, providing a backdrop for our landscape.

Traditionally, shrubs were installed along a house wall to hide the raised concrete foundations that were prevalent in some regions. Even though the purpose of installing them has evolved over time, foundation plantings remain a key element in landscaping.

Here are some tips to consider before adding foundation plantings to your home:

  1. Work with the architecture and overall style of your house: Avoid competing elements that detract from the main entrance and the house in general. The area around the entrance is where guests experience your landscape close up, so make this area welcoming with an interesting contrast of plant forms, flowers, and foliage colors and textures. Be sure not to cut off light and air around windows with plants that will grow too high.

  2. Go for four seasons of interest: Incorporate evergreens for year-round structure, but also include deciduous shrubs and perennials for ornamental value all year long. Choose plants with staggered bloom times, colorful fall foliage, and fruits in winter.

  3. Choose plants that are the right size and scale: Plan before you plant. Enlarge a photo of your house and trace the outline on paper. Add a few key features you want to keep, such as mature trees. Then experiment by sketching in plants (at their full-grown size and shape) you’re considering.
